The fighting principles of kung fu stress a mindful approach to uses of the body. In the case of using hands, kung fu requires the fighter to form a fist into an amplified weapon against an opponent. This shaping of the hands is at the heart of the form.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Extend your hands flat and curl the first crease from the tips of the fingers down to the second crease. This should be a deliberate, tight kung fu movement, concentrating your strength in each centimeter of the ends of the finger.

  2. Step 2

Fold the bent portions of your finger into the top third of your palm and wrap your thumb over, squeezing it in as tight as your can. You'll feel a pull on your outer forearm as you focus on the strength in your closed fist.

  3. Step 3

Release the fist by moving into the Tiger claw. Unfold the fingers until they mimic animal claws. Keep your fingers stiff at the ends so they cannot be bent back. Tiger claw provides the fighter with the chance to rake an opponent's face.

  4. Step 4

Form Crane style by pinching your fingers and thumb into a pyramid. Stiffen the fingers so they cannot be turned aside or bent back.

  5. Step 5

Bend your wrist downward so that your pyramid fingers are pointed to the ground. The Crane fighting style allows you to strike downward on less protected parts of the human body and is also ideal for stabbing at your opponent's eyes.
