Things You'll Need:
- Sponge
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Grout sealer
-
Step 1
Complete the installation of the tile floor according to manufacturer's directions. Wait the recommended amount of time before installing the grout. Stay off the floor in the meantime.
-
Step 2
Press the grout into the spaces between the tiles. Work as much as you can into the crevices. Smooth the surface. If you are installing ceramic tile, you can leave some grout on the tiles. If you are installing slate tiles, try to wipe up as much grout as you can before it dries. Allow the grout to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendation before walking on the tiles.
-
Step 3
Take a dry sponge. Lightly spritz water on the tiles and wipe up any excess grout. Do not make the area any wetter than you have to in order to remove the excess grout. Be careful not to damage the grout lines. When the flooring is clean, let the area dry well.
-
Step 4
Apply the grout sealer. Grout sealer comes in either roll-on or brush-on form. Choose one that's easy for you to apply. Apply the grout sealing material in one direction first. Then apply it in the opposite direction.
-
Step 5
Re-apply the grout sealer every year. You can purchase grout-sealers that last for five years. Sealing your grout annually protects your flooring investment.
