Horseback riding can be an active sport. When you first start out, riding a horse might seem a bit scary. Horses sometimes have minds of their own, so choose the calmest horse. You need a place for your feet, and this is where the saddle comes in. Learn how to saddle a horse to keep safe when riding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start by pulling the stirrup that is going to be on the other side of the horse onto the saddle so it doesn't droop down. Grab firmly with both hands and swing the saddle over the horse's back.

  2. Step 2

Feel the weight as you lift the saddle and don't strain yourself. The saddle should be placed up near the withers, not in the middle of the horse's back, but right up to the shoulders.

  3. Step 3

Drop both stirrups down and get your cinche ready for use. Pull the girth underneath the horses stomach. It will be like putting on a belt and will be an easy move to perform.

  4. Step 4

Feed the cinche up through the top of the saddle and then wrap it around and through the bottom of the buckle. Make sure your saddle has a tight fit.

  5. Step 5

Put the stick of the belt through your cinche and make sure again that it is tight and secure. Pull on it to see how the tightness is. Try the saddle out before giving the horse to a beginner.
