Rock and roll can be performed as clean or as distorted as you please, since there are so few rules in playing rock. That's what makes it such an expressive sound. You intro to playing rock will include ways to use your equipment to get a really raunchy, hard sound. Learn how to get a great rock tone with your guitar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use an electric guitar with the sound distortion and loudness buttons built right in to the body of the guitar. You can begin a slow intro in a song and change the tone while you are still playing if the knobs are within reach.

  2. Step 2

Add a foot pedal to get the great old wah-wah sound so many rock and roll tunes have in them. The foot pedal will plug into your amplifier and is another way to vary the tone without interrupting your playing.

  3. Step 3

Replace the pick-up on your electric guitar with one that is more suited to rock and roll. Find out what kind of pick-up your favorite rocker used and buy a duplicate or a replica to get the same kind of tone. You may not be able to play as fast or well as a rock star, but you can mimic the tone with the right kind of equipment.

  4. Step 4

Experiment with your amplifier and where you sit in relation to it. Feedback and acoustics play a big part in developing a rockin' sound. Old and new amps provide different sounds too, so take some time to play with the volumes and the equalizers until you hear the kinds of tones you desire.
