Every rock climber will perform the undercling technique during the progression of a climb. Training yourself to understand and properly perform an undercling will enhance your skills and help you gain the confidence and the ability to scale more difficult walls.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by setting your hand in the undercling. Turn your hand so your palm faces upward and your fingers grasp the inside of the hand hold. Your fingers should be pointed up and curved back toward your chest.

  2. Step 2

Pull your weight as close to the rock wall as you can so that you hug the rock. The whole point of performing an undercling is that it allows you to press up against the rock.

  3. Step 3

Extend your other arm to its fullest reach and grasp another hand hold. Reach as far up and out to your side as you can. By moving out at wide angle, you maximize the benefit of the undercling grasp.

  4. Step 4

Pull the opposing foot of the undercling hand up and into another hold. For example, if your right hand is performing the undercling hold, move your left foot first and then your right. Once you've got your feet and other hand in place, the hand in the undercling grasp is free to find another hold.

Tips & Warnings
