The rewoven figure 8 knot is specifically used in rock climbing to tie a rope to a harness. There are other knots that may be used for this purpose but the rewoven figure 8 has the advantage of not capsizing easily and is easy to tie. The following steps will show how to tie in a rock climbing harness with a rewoven figure 8 knot.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie a figure 8 knot with the standing end of your climbing rope. The standing end normally will be securely tied at the top of the climb.

  2. Step 2

Form a loop A and pass the working end over the standing end. Bring the working end under and around the standing end. Push the working end through the initial loop from the top to form loop B.

  3. Step 3

Push the working end under your climbing harness and bring it back out. You will now retrace the path of the figure 8 by keeping the working end on the outside of the first rope.

  4. Step 4

Pass the working end of the rope through the exit point of the figure 8 knot from below. Bring it around the standing end and push it through loop A from above. Bring the working end around the end of the rope nearest you. Now push it back through loop B to exit the knot.

  5. Step 5

Dress a rewoven figure 8 knot by ensuring that the two paths through the knot do not cross over. Snug up the knot by pulling firmly on the working and standing ends at the same time.
