Climbing overhangs on a rock wall presents a set of challenges. Overhangs require a tremendous amount of upper-body strength to scale. Training to develop the muscle and confidence to master this skill will help you to conquer the toughest rocks.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set yourself comfortably and think about where you're going to climb before attempting to scale an overhang. Tracking a path in your mind will help you make the most of each move and limit your time in physically taxing positions.

  2. Step 2

Locate your first hand holds. Get your feet as close to the overhang as possible to help you grasp the first hand holds. Depending on the wall you're climbing, you may or may not be able to use your feet to help you scale the overhang.

  3. Step 3

Lift your hand to the highest hold you can reach. Using mostly upper body strength, heave yourself upward to either your next hand hold or, if you can, to a position where you can plant your feet and return to a less physical climbing technique.

  4. Step 4

Continue climbing from hand hold to hand hold. If the overhang is large, your feet may be dangling useless beneath you while your upper body controls your movement. Use your momentum to swing yourself to each new hand hold until you've reached an area where you can plant your feet.

  5. Step 5

Practice climbing over overhangs regularly to improve your upper-body strength and perfect your technique.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear protective gear when rock climbing. The most skilled climbers will still experience falls and slides, so your protective gear is critical to avoiding serious injury.
