How to Use the Mantle Technique in Rock Climbing

The mantle technique is what a climber uses to lift herself onto a flat ledge. It's a technique that you're probably familiar with even if you don't recognize the name. It's similar to lifting yourself out of a swimming pool without a ladder.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the ledge or flat surface on which you will mantle.

  2. Step 2

Place your feet solidly into foot holds under that ledge.

  3. Step 3

Set your hands palms down and your fingers bent over the edge of the surface to provide as much balance as possible. Keep your body as straight as you can over your palms.

  4. Step 4

Hike yourself up onto the ledge with one foot. While it may seem easier to get a knee onto the ledge, it's much more difficult to get your foot up there if you start on your knee.

  5. Step 5

Search out new hand holds once your weight is stabilized between the one foot on the ledge and the other still resting in its original hold.

  6. Step 6

Use the leg on the ledge and the new hand holds to hoist yourself upright so you're standing on the ledge, completing the mantle rock climbing technique.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid laying into the rock before you plant your foot on the ledge, as this will do nothing more than create more strain on your arms.
  • Always wear protective gear when climbing. Accidents happen to the most experienced climbers, but your protective gear will help you avoid serious injuries.
