How to Use Rock Climbing Hand Hold Techniques

On a rock face you never know what you are going to run into and what there will be to hold on to. You should be prepared to climb from one position to the other with great hand holding skills. Here are some tips.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Use hands and arms mainly for balance. Find the best position to keep your body's center of gravity balanced above your feet. The more difficult and smooth the climbing route, the harder it is to find the best position.

  2. Step 2

    Curl the fingers in the Open Hand Grip. This grip is used where there are rounder protrusions on the rock wall. Keep your hand relaxed and in a normal position. This grip is easier on the fingers, however you will need greater strength of the forearm.

  3. Step 3

    Bend the fingers so that they look crimped for those tiny, hardly there lips in the wall. This hand hold is called the Crimp. Place the thumb on top of the first knuckle.

  4. Step 4

    Compress your fingers for the Finger Lock Hold. Keep your thumb down. This hold is used when a small crack is the only hold available. Place the pointer finger securely inside the crack.

  5. Step 5

    Save the strain on the fingers with a Pushing Hold. While your feet are taking the weight, press your palm flat on the rock face and make your next move.

  6. Step 6

    Relax while you're climbing. Rock climbing demands endurance from your hands. Use a light touch with just enough power in your grip. Avoid squeezing the rock hard.

  • Strengthen your hands with a hang board. Hang boards are similar to a pull up bars, but customized for climbers. They are made to simulate natural hand holds, so you can practice the different types of holds.
