How to Set Up to Belay a Rock Climber

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer

Rock climbing is safest when climbers work in pairs. One person climbs, and the other, the belayer, spots and supports from below. Setting up to belay your partner is highly important. Any mistakes here could kill your partner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves (optional)
  • Harness
  • Belay device
  • Carabiner
  1. Step 1

Put on your harness and fasten it snugly around your legs and waist. Put on gloves if your hands are sensitive or to prevent chafing.

  2. Step 2

Grab the rope that's farthest from the face of the rock. This is the belay rope. It's also the rope that the lead climber descended with after securing the rope up top. Look up to make sure. The other rope is the climb rope and should be attached to the climber.

  3. Step 3

Hold the belay device in one hand and the rope in the other. Bend the rope and push it through the top of the belay device until it touches the ring at the base.

  4. Step 4

Use a locking carabiner of the largest size available. Open the carabiner by twisting it first and then pushing its gate inward. Slide the carabiner through the center of the belay rope and belay device.

  5. Step 5

Clip the carabiner to your harness at the large loop in the front. This is the belay loop. Let go and the carabiner locks automatically.

  6. Step 6

Yell "on belay" to let the climber know you have secured the rope to yourself. Wait for climber to call back "belay on" to indicate that he heard you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Double check your work. Your partner will be suspended in air with you providing the safety net in case of a fall. Ask for help if any part is unclear or doesn't look right.
