How to Remove the Front Wheel of a Bicycle

From time to time, every bicycle enthusiast will be faced with the need to replace or repair a tire. Knowing how to remove your front wheel is a critical but straightforward part of this process process.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Flip the bicycle upside-down so you have easy access to the front wheel. If you have a lift to secure the bicycle, you can also use that.

  2. Step 2

    Inspect the brake system for the front wheel. Many have a lever you can use to disconnect or widen the brakes to make removing the front wheel. If you see a handle or lever, pull it out and down to release the brakes. This provides a bigger opening for the wheel to move through.

  3. Step 3

    Look at the other side of the bicycle, where the wheel is secured to the frame. Loosen and remove the axle nut by turning it in a counterclockwise direction. There may or may not be a washer style piece underneath. If there is, remove this as well. Set these safely aside.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the front wheel of your bicycle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider letting some air out of the wheel if you find you still need more clearance to remove it from the bicycle frame.
