Players call for a safety in pool when they don't have a shot. A player analyzes his balls on the table finds himself out of shot options. The player doesn't want to risk accidentally leaving his opponent an easy shot and calls for a safety, which means the player does not intend to make a ball.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Announce the intention to make a safety. According to the rules of billiards, a player has to audibly declare the safety.

  2. Step 2

Line up the cue ball to strike one of the balls in play. The cue ball must hit one of the player's ball first and not one of the opponent's.

  3. Step 3

Hit the cue ball so that it or the ball which it strikes collides with at least one of the rails. The rules do not state which rail must be hit, but either the cue ball or the ball which is struck must touch one of the rails.

  4. Step 4

Snooker the opponent by leaving him without a clear shot. If the opponent cannot see his ball when he tries to line it up with the cue ball, he is snookered.
