Step 1
Look at the pool cue's shaft near the base to determine the weight. Most pool cues weigh between 16 and 21 ounces, and the number is often written along the base of the cue. If the weight has worn off, pick up a few and decide on a heavier or lighter cue.
-
Step 2
Examine the tip of the pool cue. Find a cue with a full rounded-edge tip. Don't use the pool cues with a knobby or worn away tip. A tip that has a well defined edge and full tip is much likelier to result in a clean shot.
-
Step 3
Determine if the pool cue is level. Roll the cue on the table, if it rolls smoothly the pool cue is level. If the cue wobbles as it rolls, the cue is not straight and shots won't be true.
-
Step 4
Buy your own pool cue if you want to be absolutely certain of the quality and not rely on the cue in the pool hall. Many cues are 2-piece cues that screw together, making them more portable.
-
Step 5
Test several styles of pool cues to find the most suitable one. The subtle variations between pool cues can give a player a bit of an edge that could result in a winning game.
