How to Take Night Photos

Taking photos at night can give you some unique shots because the lighting makes everything look so different than what it looks like during the day. Follow these tips to take night photos that you'll want to show your friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your camera so that the shutter stays open longer than it would for day time photos. You want the shutter to open and close slowly so that more light is let in which gives you a brighter picture.

    • 2

Use a tripod so that you don't move your hands when you are taking a picture. You don't want the photo to be blurry.

    • 3

Adjust your settings depending on the scenery. You need different settings for city lights on building and cars than you do when you are photographing the moon or stars. Make sure your camera is set for night time before you start.

    • 4

Know your camera. Read the instructions that come with the camera so that you know what your camera is capable of doing and what special features your camera has.

    • 5

Be aware of the lighting around you. Use a regular flash to add light when in a dim room and use an external flash outside when photographing a person. You won't need a flash for most outside night photos.

    • 6

Try different settings at different times of night. You need different light depending on whether it is dusk, dawn or the dead of night.

    • 7

Be creative. Try the same photo from different angles and with different lighting. Take a picture of something moving and see how the light trails from it.
