How to Apply the Second Coat of Car Paint to a Bumper

Painting the bumper of your car is usually easy to do if you have prior experience handling auto paint and if you obtain the right tools. After you have sanded and put the first coat of paint on the bumper, you can then start applying the second coat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wait for the first coat to dry. After you finish the first coat of bumper paint, take a short break. It takes anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes for first coat to dry.

  2. Step 2

Check the paint. Before you paint again, place a finger on the bumper of the car. You're ready to continue if the paint does not stick to your finger. If it's still sticky, wait another 5 to 10 minutes and then test it again.

  3. Step 3

Use a paint gun to apply the second coat to the bumper. Refill your paint gun if you are running low on the auto paint. Then, take the paint gun and spray the bumper thoroughly. You are going to want to apply a medium coat at this point.

  4. Step 4

Plan to apply the clear coat once the second coat is finished. Perform a quick visual check to make sure that you went over the entire bumper with the second coat. Once you are satisfied, then prepare to apply the clear coat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't wait too long to apply your second coat of paint. The two coats should get done right away in order to blend well together.
  • Don't put on the second coat too quickly either. Otherwise, the surface won't be smooth once you are finished painting.
