Things You'll Need:
- Cassette lockring tool
- Adjustable wrench
- Chain whip
-
Step 1
Make note of what gear the bike is in so you can put the chain back onto the correct gear. Open the cam lever or unscrew the nut of the back wheel. Ease the chain away from the wheel as you pull the wheel away from the frame of the bike.
-
Step 2
Remove the quick release or the nut and axle from the rear wheel of the mountain bike.
-
Step 3
Take a cassette lockring tool and place it into the grooves of the lockring that's situated in the center of the gear cassette.
-
Step 4
Use your chain whip to hold the cassette in place by playing a section of chain around the cassette and lever the handle part of the chain whip around the other side of the cassette to hold the gear cassette in place.
-
Step 5
Fix an adjustable wrench onto the lockring. Pull the two tools (the wrench locked onto the lockring and the chain whip) in opposite directions to loosen the gear cassette. When the wrench moves freely on the cassette tool, remove it and pull the gear cassette off of the bike.
