Things You'll Need:
- Spark plugs
- Socket wrench
- Socket wrench extension
- Spark plug socket
-
Step 1
Gather your tools. Check the motorcycle's specifications for plugs and purchase plugs for your particular brand of motorcycle. Make sure to buy plugs gapped for your machine.
-
Step 2
Grasp the motorcycle's spark plug wires near the spark plug end. Gently but firmly pull them off the spark plugs. If you yank too hard, you may need to buy a set of wires as well.
-
Step 3
Clean the area around the spark plug. You can use compressed air for this.
-
Step 4
Assemble the wrench, extension and socket. Place the socket over one of the spark plugs. Remove the plug from the motorcycle. Repeat the process for the other spark plug.
-
Step 5
Inspect each plug. If they show grayish or light tan coloration, your motorcycle is running about right. If the plugs are black, your engine is running too rich and you may have oil problems. If they are white, the engine is running lean. Also inspect each spark plug for cracked insulators and worn electrodes.
-
Step 6
Put the new spark plugs back in the motorcycle. Start the first plug in the hole by hand. Then continue tightening with the wrench. Do no over-tighten the spark plug. Repeat for the other plug.
-
Step 7
Place the spark plug wires back on the spark plugs. You should hear a snap when they seat.
