Decorating with small pieces of stone, colored glass or tile is known as mosaic. No two pieces of art need to be the same. However if you need to create multiples of the same item you need to create a pattern to duplicate the project over and over. Follow these steps to create a pattern for your mosaic tile project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how the pattern for the mosaic tile project should look. Different shapes in various sizes will work. Use the project surface to help determine the pattern, and take into account where the project will be placed.

  2. Step 2

Draw the pattern on a piece of paper. If you use a pencil for the design you have the freedom to change the pattern any time. Finish the pattern so you have an overall idea of what the finished project will look like and how large it will be.

  3. Step 3

Trace an existing mosaic tile pattern onto tracing paper instead of coming up with an original design. Note the size and color of mosaic tiles and color them in on the pattern.

  4. Step 4

Affix the pattern to carbon paper using tape.

  5. Step 5

Secure the pattern to a project surface, and make sure it doesn't shift. If the pattern shifts, it can change the entire look of the mosaic pattern.

  6. Step 6

Retrace the mosaic tile pattern. This will transfer the pattern onto the project surface via the carbon paper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use graph paper to create an original mosaic tile pattern and color in the squares to see how it will look.
