Instructions

    • 1

Put on a dust mask and add some mortar mix to your bucket.

    • 2

Pour water into the bucket of mortar mix a little at a time. Use a small container so you can control the amount of water.

    • 3

Stir the mortar and water together using a trowel. You must achieve a thick, wet consistency. If the mortar runs right off the paint stick, it's too wet. Add more mortar mix, again using a small container for control.

    • 4

Mix enough mortar to last you about 20 to 30 minutes. When the mortar begins to dry out, stop using it and mix a fresh batch rather than simply adding more water. Adding water after a batch sets prevents the mixture from bonding well to the tile and surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start by making small batches until you know how much you can use in 20 minutes.

  • You can use a thick, wooden paint stirrer to mix your mortar instead of a trowel.

  • Mortar dust contains silica and is harmful if inhaled. Always follow the manufacturer's safety instructions when handling dry mortar.
