A strong fist in martial arts translates directly into strong punches and even strong blocks. Conversely, a weak or poorly formed fists not only weakens your punch power but can also lead you to injury. Follow these steps to make a proper fist for mixed martial arts training.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with an open blade. Hold your hand up with fingers together so your hand resemble a blade. This is the starting point for properly making a fist.

  2. Step 2

Fold and bend the two joints. Fold your fingers at your second set of joints and allow a slight angle at the first set of joints (the ones closest to your fingertips) so that the tips of your fingers almost touch the top of your palm. Keep a little bit of distance between your fingers and palm. Then close the fist by folding at the third set of joints (the one nearest to your wrist) so your fingertips come to rest in the middle of your palm.

  3. Step 3

Bring the thumb in. Fold your thumb to the side so that the side of your thumb rests against the space between your first and second set of joints. Make sure the thumb is at a comfortable and solid angle and that it does not stick out above your knuckles or below them.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze and stiffen. To keep your fist in proper form for martial arts squeeze it tightly. The tighter you keep the fist the stronger it will be. Make sure that your wrist is straight and that there's no dorsiflexion or plantarflexion that might result in a weakened fist or a break.
