How to Cut a Pattern From Fabric for a Decorative Pillow

Cut out your fabric and you're well on your way to making a finished decorative pillow. Cutting your fabric seems easy enough, but if you are not careful, you will not have two matching sides that you can use to make your decorative pillow. Each of these steps will help you to get the right size fabric cut every time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a prepared pattern. You may have already purchased a pattern to make your pillow. If so, simply pin it to your fabric and use scissors to cut along the outline of the pattern.

  2. Step 2

Draw a circle pattern directly onto your fabric. You can do this by tying a marker to a piece of string. Hold the loose end of the string down on the fabric and pull the marker until the string is taut. Then, keeping the string taut, draw your circle. Cut out one circle and then pin down that circle on another piece of fabric. Cut around that circle as if it were a pattern.

  3. Step 3

Tear your woven fabric to make a perfect square or rectangle pillow. Don't try cutting straight lines if you do not have a pattern to follow. Instead, measure the length of one side of your pillow. Then measure this length on your fabric. Use a scissors to mark the length on your fabric and tear the fabric. This will give you a straight line. Do this for all four sides. Then repeat the process to make the other piece of fabric.
