Leg waxing is a great way to get smooth legs without the hassle of shaving several times a week. Whether you are doing the waxing yourself or going to a professional, follow these preparations to get a fantastic result with a minimal amount of pain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow leg hair to grow to at least 1/4 inch long. Longer hair is easier for the wax to adhere to. This typically means not shaving for about 2 to 3 weeks.

  2. Step 2

Exfoliate the area to be waxed several days before to remove dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs.

  3. Step 3

Ensure the leg area is completely clean, dry and free of any moisturizers and oils. Additional products on the skin can prevent the wax from adhering properly.

  4. Step 4

Invest in a numbing spray. Available at beauty supply stores, these cold sprays can help take the sting out of waxing. If you are having your legs waxed by a professional, bring this spray to your appointment.

  5. Step 5

Apply the numbing spray to the area to be waxed thoroughly to numb the skin. Wait several minutes before waxing.

  6. Step 6

Practice and use relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, during the waxing process. This can help make the experience seem less painful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a mild pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, about 30 to 40 minutes prior to waxing to minimize swelling.
  • Plan to wax your legs at a time that doesn't immediately precede or follow your menstrual cycle. Skin is most sensitive then. A 3-day window should be sufficient.
  • Avoid pools, hot tubs and the ocean for 24 hours after waxing. Skin may be irritated following waxing, and chemicals and salt water can cause additional pain.
  • Don't wax sunburned, cracked or injured skin because it will be extremely painful and could delay healing.
