Improper dumping of gasoline and oil is illegal and can earn you a hefty fine. Dumping of these chemicals introduces pollutants into our water supply and poses a danger to humans, animals and plants. Follow these steps to dispose of the gas and oil from your lawnmower and adhere to the rules and regulations of the county in which you reside.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Drain the gas or oil from your lawnmower into a heavy-duty plastic storage container designed for these materials. Only use containers with a screw on top and remember to replace the lid securely after filling.
Step2
Find out where you can dispose of these materials in your county. Rules and regulations do vary from county to county. Visit your local city hall, an establishment that changes oil in vehicles or an auto parts store. One of these places will know where you can take your oil and gas for proper disposal.
Step3
Bring money with you to the authorized disposal site and be prepared to pay a fee when you bring them your oil or gas. Some places won't charge a fee to take your oil and gas, but many will. The money you spend for this service is well worth the benefit to the environment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't leave oil or gas for your local garbage truck to collect. A few have the authority to take it but most don't. If they do, they will most likely charge you an additional fee for doing so.
  • Never pour motor oil or gasoline on the ground, into storm drains or in your trash. If caught, you could face a stiff penalty for littering.
