How to Make a Monkey Fist Necklace
The monkey fist is so named for its resemblance to a fist. It was originally designed to serve as a weight on a heaving line, and a stone may be securely placed inside the knot to provide additional weight. The monkey fist also may be used decoratively to make a necklace, and the following steps will show how this is done.

1
Use a lengthy working end for this knot. The monkey's fist requires a considerable amount of rope, and 10 feet might be needed with even a modest-sized rope.
-
2
Form three complete loops with the rope. They are typically wrapped around your hand or some other long object with an open end and then removed. Pull the working end through all of the loops.
-
-
3
Wrap the working end three times around the outside of the loops created in Step 2 to create a second set of loops and pass the working end through the first set of loops.
-
4
Make a third set of loops by wrapping the working end three times around the loops created in Step 2 so that the third set is over the second set and inside the first set of loops.
-
5
Place a marble or other round object of appropriate size inside the monkey fist to help retain its shape. Work the slack out of the knot carefully to tighten it around the marble. Tie the two ends of the necklace together with a secure knot like a double fisherman.
