How to Get Out of a Sea Kayak

A wet exit is a term used by kayakers to describe getting out of your sea kayak when you tip over or fall under the water. Many people learn this procedure first before kayaking in order to prevent getting stuck underwater in the kayak.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a safe place to practice the wet exit. When learning a wet exit for the first time, you should have all your gear on and sitting on dry land. After a couple of tries, you can practice the wet exit in a pool or lake.

    • 2

Check the spray skirt. For a wet exit to be done correctly, the spray skirt must have been put on the outside of the kayak. Run your fingers under the seam to see if it is on right.

    • 3

Release the paddle. As you fall, let go of your paddle in order to have your hands free.

    • 4

Grab the handle of the spray skirt. Lift the handle and pull it towards the front of your kayak. This will pop the skirt off and allow you to let go of the handle.

    • 5

Place your hands on the sides of the kayak and push yourself out quickly. Swim over to the kayak and grab one of the straps. The paddle is picked up after the wet exit is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must take safety precautions when performing a wet exit in a sea kayak. Remember to wear your life vest at all times and never kayak alone if you are a beginner.

  • It is important to relax during a wet exit. If you start to panic, you are likely to make potentially deadly mistakes.
