It's important to transport kayaks properly to ensure optimum boat conditions when used on the water. Kayaks can be transported upside down, on their side or attached to a specially designed kayak rack. How a kayak is made will also determine how best to transport it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the kayak on the top of the car. Turn it upside down if you're using foam pads, or position it to fit your roof rack.

  2. Step 2

Move the kayak so it is perfectly parallel with the car. The point of the kayak should be as straightforward as possible.

  3. Step 3

Secure the kayak to the roof rack with 1-inch wide webbing straps that have spring-loaded buckles. Space straps as far apart as you can. Wrap the straps over the kayak and under the hull before moving to the other side.

  4. Step 4

Pull the straps tight without using extreme force or your full body weight. The kayak should be secure without being stressed or bent in any way.

  5. Step 5

Secure all loose ends of the straps so they don't slap against the car or kayak while traveling.

  6. Step 6

Check the kayak periodically when you stop to be sure it is still well secured. Adjust straps as needed to keep the kayak in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • For long trips, add an additional rope at the front and back of the kayak secured to the front and rear bumper of your car.
  • Transport sea kayaks and kayaks made of wood upside down to prevent damage to the interior.
