Step 1
Review all the major scales before you began to harmonize. This makes it much easier to create the chords needed. Keep a copy of the scales for quick reference.
-
Step 2
Create the chord as if you are creating triads except use groups of four with every other note. For example, in the C major scale the chords are C-E-G-B, D-F-A-C, E-G-B-D and so on.
-
Step 3
Follow the style of the major key with a major 7, minor 7, minor 7, major 7, major 7, minor 7 and a diminished 7. This is the scale formula for harmonizing a major scale. It work with all major scales.
-
Step 4
Work through all the scales to become familiar with the concept and formula used to harmonize on a jazz guitar.
-
Step 5
Practice each scale until it is comfortable to play and you can do it without thinking about the notes and hand positions. When you can harmonize without preparation you can enjoy the sound and rhythm in your music.
-
Step 6
Study the music to find the appropriate times to harmonize. Do not over use this new skill.
