Many yo-yo tricks are variations on or extensions of other, less complicated tricks. This is so with the Atomic Bomb. Others know this trick by the name of "Barrel Rolls." Once you've mastered the trick called "Split the Atom," you'll be ready to tackle the Atomic Bomb. Remember that practice is the key, and quitting is not allowed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw the yo-yo out in front of you with a powerful enough snap to cause it to "sleep" (spin in place). Use the index finger of your non-throwing hand, hooking it behind the string, so that you can bring the midpoint of the string up to a point higher than your throwing hand.

  2. Step 2

Use that motion to cause the yo-yo itself to come up toward the index finger of your throwing hand, so that it winds around it once, from the inside out, or back to front. Be sure to get the string into the groove of the yo-yo. Let the yo-yo rest at that point to get your bearings, and make sure that you're ready for the next step.

  3. Step 3

Bring your non-throwing hand around in front of and underneath the yo-yo in one swift motion, almost in a complete circle, back up to a position behind and above the throwing hand.

  4. Step 4

Take the index finger of your throwing hand, which now has the yo-yo in at close quarters, and loop that finger around in front of the yo-yo, catching the string as you go. It's best to sharply snap your throwing hand forward as you do this, so that the yo-yo snaps up and around your index finger from the back.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 as many times as you wish, keeping in mind that the string will continually be wrapping around your finger, and that you can get to a point where the yo-yo is too close to work with. That gives you the motions of the Atomic Bomb, perhaps because of its resemblance to a series of explosions.
