1
Prepare to spend about fifteen minutes with your Yorkie in these training sessions. Yorkies are smart, but they tire quickly, so train him in short sessions.
-
2
Keep the dog treats in hand where your Yorkie can see them. She will respond promptly once she learns there is a treat for her.
-
-
3
Sit down on the floor with your Yorkie. Pat the floor in front of you so he comes over. Show him the treat.
-
4
Put your hand on the floor in front of you with the dog treat in that hand. Your Yorkie will try to get the dog treat. Do not release it until she does lay down.
-
5
Say "down" while patting the floor with the hand that has the treat in it. If your Yorkie does not know what to do, show him. Take your other hand and press him down gently with that hand, while saying "down."
-
6
Give her the treat immediately as she does the trick. Say "down" and then "good girl". Release her if you pressed her down. Continue to train her.
-
7
Try again right away. Pat the floor in front of you with another treat in hand. Say "down." Your Yorkie should begin to catch on. Only reward when he actually does lay down.
