How to Teach Your Small Dog to Sit

Small dogs are easier to handle, but it is still a good idea to teach them basic obedience commands. It lets your dog know that you are in charge and improves your relationship. Follow these steps to learn how to teach your small dog to sit.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a place that is free of distractions to teach your dog to sit. If you're at a park filled with other dogs, he will not pay attention and it will become frustrating for both of you.

  2. Step 2

Place your small dog on a leash. This will assure that you have her attention at all times, and it also prevents your dog from straying.

  3. Step 3

Keep your pocket filled with smelly treats. Your dog will smell them and be eager to please in order to get a treat.

  4. Step 4

Sit down in front of your dog so that you are at his level. Hold the treat in front of your dog's nose. Keep your fingers closed so he can't get it.

  5. Step 5

Tell your dog to sit. If she doesn't yet know how or isn't doing it on command, press her bottom to the ground while giving the command. Give her the treat when her bottom and all four paws are on the ground.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this about five times then let your dog play. Perform this process four to five times daily.

Tips & Warnings
  • After your dog is obeying your commands regularly, cut back on the treats and just award your dog with extensive praise.
