Riding lawnmowers make lawnmowing a breeze. Starting a riding lawmower is straightforward. If the mower is in good condition, the following general steps should get it up and running in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit comfortably on the seat. Do not lean too far in either direction. To maintain balance and stay comfortable, plant feet firmly and take a relaxed but reasonably firm grip on the steering.

  2. Step 2

Put the transmission in neutral. The engine, just like that of a car or truck, will not start unless the engine is in neutral. Move the lever until it is place directly over the neutral position.

  3. Step 3

Depress the clutch using either your left or right leg, whichever is appropriate for the type of mower. Keep the clutch pedal depressed by pushing down firmly.

  4. Step 4

Turn the key to the ON position. The engine should turn over and start. Once the engine starts, remove hand from the ignition key and place it back onto the steering wheel.

  5. Step 5

Stop the engine by turning the key to the left. Riding lawnmower's ignition system operates in much the same way as the ignition on a car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the engine tuned and well maintained.
  • Do not try to operate a riding lawnmower while physically impaired in any way.
