Things You'll Need:
- Backerboard
- Mosaic tiles
- Tile nippers
- Grout
- Trowel
- Sponge
- Sealer
-
Step 1
Attach a backerboard to the drywall in your kitchen. This is a critical step to prevent moisture and mildew from becoming trapped in the wall.
-
Step 2
Cut or break your tiles and glass into the shapes and sizes of your choice. You can do this by either using the nippers to shape the pieces, or you can place them under a towel and lightly strike them with a hammer.
-
Step 3
Design your layout to ensure you have enough material to complete your project.
-
Step 4
Use your trowel to butter the back of each mosaic piece. Apply the grout generously so that the glass bonds securely to the backerboard.
-
Step 5
Place each mosaic piece on the backerboard and hold it for a few seconds. The piece will have a tendency to slip for a few moments, so press until the grout forms a tight bond. Repeat this process until the backerboard is completely covered with the tile pieces and your mosaic design is complete. Allow grout to dry thoroughly.
-
Step 6
Grout the completed mosaic design. Be sure to fill all gaps and spaces completely to avoid sharp edges. Allow the grout to dry for a minimum of 12 hours.
-
Step 7
Clean the backsplash with water and a sponge. Repeat this process until all the excess grout is removed from the mosaic tiles. Then, seal your mosaic according to the directions on the sealer.
