Hot stone massage originated in Native American sweat lodges and in the healing rituals of ancient China. Many salons offer these methods, which, when combined with Swedish massage, soothe sore muscles. The massage therapist places heated stones on various parts of the body to relieve pain. Here's how to complete preparation for a hot stone massage therapy session.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Massage stone heater
  • Aromatherapy oils
  • Fresh linens
  • Fresh towels
  • Basalt stones
  1. Step 1

Sanitize and heat the massage stones. You may place the stones in a specially designed stone heater available from spa equipment companies and heat them in water at temperatures no higher than 150 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Determine the number of stones needed for a massage. Talk with the client beforehand to find out their exact problem areas. The massage stones, made of basalt, gemstones or tenishi stones, come in a variety of sizes so they can be placed on different parts of the body, like the spine, thigh, face, fingers or toes.

  3. Step 3

Choose an aromatherapy oil. Essential oils add to the healing nature of the hot stones. They may be placed under the client's nose during the massage session to help them relax. Different aromatherapy oils serve different purposes, Jasmine combats depression while rosemary relieves fatigue and arthritis symptoms.

  4. Step 4

Bless the stones in preparation if you're performing energy or reiki work on your client. The combination of hot stone therapy and energy work makes the body's seven chakras more receptive to healing.

  5. Step 5

Finish with massage table preparation. Cover the table with fresh linens. Have a good supply of towels ready and make sure the changing area has been cleaned and has a fresh robe. Play soothing New Age or classical music.
