Step 1
Learn the counts for each part of each hip hop dance movement you are practicing. Dance counts are always 1 through 8. An instructor may explain a movement they are teaching by saying that this step or movement takes four 8 counts.
-
Step 2
Apply the name of each step or movement while you learn it and practice it to the counts. Your instructor may say go to "knee lift" and you've learned that the "knee lift" takes three 8 counts. The steps or movements may have strange names or they could have a name that gives you a clue as to what you should be doing.
-
Step 3
Practice each hip hop dance movement or step with the appropriate music. You may have to play the same section of music many times while learning how to hit the exact step or movement to each dance count and music beat.
-
Step 4
Blend it all together to make the individual hip hop movements flow into a hip hop dance routine. You know your steps, you know which movement takes place on what dance counts and you know which counts apply to which music beats. Now, do it all together in the sequence choreographed, one movement right into the next movement. Now, you've got it; you're doing hip hop dance routines.
