How to Stretch Your Torso

Hip hop dancing is like any other sport or activity in that it is important to stretch before and after practice. Not only does stretching help to reduce the chance of injury and muscle pain, it will also help to keep your body loose for easy moving during your hip hop routine. With a few simple moves, you can quickly and easily stretch your torso for free and easy moving.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch your torso before your hip hop routine by first standing with your feet about shoulder length apart. Focus on elongating your body and torso, gently pushing your shoulders up towards the ceiling as you envision your feet pressing firmly down into the earth. Keep you neck relaxed and your head facing straight forward.

    • 2

Begin the stretch by bringing your arms straight out on either side of you. Open the chest and gently stretch to the the left. Bring your right arm up and over your head, reaching to your left, as you bring your left hand to your right hip, reaching to your right.

    • 3

Breath slowly and deeply, allowing the stretch to move further on the exhale. Never move past the point of comfort; that is, if you feel uncomfortable or a bit of pain, let up a bit on the stretch. Hold the stretch between 16 and 32 counts each time for maximum results.

    • 4

Relax your body as you carefully move to your neutral position. Again, focus on feeling the length and height of your body. Repeat the stretch moving to your right side. Perform this stretch at least two times on either side to fully stretch and loosen the torso before and after your hip hop practice or routine.
