It's happened to just about everyone. You're getting ready for work one morning and notice that the hem has come out of your favorite pair of work pants. Instead of taking the clothes to a tailor and waiting days to have them back, learn how to sew a hem on a pair of pants. This will save you valuable time and money.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pin the hem in place on the pants using straight pins.

  2. Step 2

Thread your needle and start by sewing an anchor stitch. Take the needle through the material on the edge at the base of the hem and pull through. On the second time coming around, pass the needle through the loop of thread creating a knot. This creates a stitch that will hold all others in place.

  3. Step 3

Grab a little of the pant material with the needle and then push the needle through pulling it tight to secure the stitch.

  4. Step 4

Use a circular motion to create stitches in the hem looping through the fabric. When the thread is through, double-back to re-grab some material. This will cause the stitching to be more secure and leave a repeated "X" pattern on the hem.

  5. Step 5

Continue around the entire cuff and tie off at the end using another anchor stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • While pushing the needle through the material, make sure the needle doesn't go all the way through the pant material. You don't want to see stitching on the outside of the pant hem.
