Many computer systems store data on devices known as hard drives. The most common hard drive interface is an IDE or integrated drive electronics drive. Installing an IDE hard drive is a typical task for any computer user and adds to the computer's data-saving abilities.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Disconnect any power source to the computer and discharge any static electricity by touching the inside of the computer case.

  2. Step 2

Identify the IDE cable running from the computer's motherboard and terminating in an IDE cable connector. The end connector is the designated master. Additional connectors on the cable are slave connectors.

  3. Step 3

Determine the order of the new IDE hard drive. Slave or additional IDE hard drives require jumpers to designate them slaves. Master hard drives need a jumper to label them as the main hard drive.

  4. Step 4

Look at the computer's motherboard to find the master IDE 1 connector and insert the cable into position. The area labeled IDE 1 or IDE MAIN is the connector for the master IDE hard drive.

  5. Step 5

Add other IDE hard drives or devices to the second IDE connector on the computer motherboard. CDROM, DVD devices and additional hard drive storage is connected to this IDE 2 connector.

  6. Step 6

Attach the IDE hard drive to the computer's case rails using the provided hardware. Four small screws are the most common method of securing the hard drive to the case.

  7. Step 7

Power on the computer system to ensure the computer recognizes the additional IDE hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a static-grounding strap during the IDE hard drive installation to prevent static discharge.
  • Pressing the power button on the computer discharges any capacitors on the motherboard.
  • Keep the computer on a firm and stable surface while you add the IDE hard drive.
