Step 1
Decide on a costume so that you don't buy things you don't need. Liquid latex, nose and scar wax, plain gelatin, and plastic putty are great for zombie and monster looks but not as important for some vampire looks, while fake blood and white cream-based makeup would be on the top of the list for a Dracula costume.

Step 2
Check costume idea books or the Internet for Halloween makeup inspiration or just buy a makeup kit if your costume is fairly straightforward. Vampire, zombie, and witch face makeup kits are pretty easy to find, but you'll need to look beyond that if you're going to be something like a car accident victim or Victorian ghost or if you want to go all out with your makeup.

Step 3
Buy supplies well in advance of Halloween so that you'll have what you need. Invest in great brushes and tools for your Halloween makeup to make the application process easier. Be sure to practice the look beforehand if it's complicated, including any latex pieces or hair.

Step 4
Keep your supplies in a plastic storage container in zip-top bags and it'll keep until next season. However, never use makeup that is too old, has changed in color or smell or has been exposed to too much air, moisture, or temperature fluctuations.
