Men's haircuts are often more difficult than women's due to the overall difference in length. Men typically have shorter hair, so stylists find it challenging to ensure an even cut throughout because the hair length cannot be determined easily by eye as with a woman's haircut. Follow these easy steps to cut men's hair with the feeling method to ensure an even and consistent cut throughout the head.

Things You'll Need:

  • Razors, straight and electric
  1. Step 1

Assess the overall length of the hair with your eye before beginning. Ask the person how they would like their hair to be cut, and consult with your client sufficiently before beginning the haircut.

  2. Step 2

Wash the client's hair so the hair will be easier to work with while using the razor or scissors. Take your index finger and middle finger and grab a section of hair at the bottom of the hairline and pull until you have accessed the desired length to be removed.

  3. Step 3

Cut or razor the amount of hair that is showing underneath the index and middle finger. Continue to pull this amount of hair through the two fingers and cut hair according to this measuring system. Pay special attention to whether you are consistently pulling the same amount of hair down to be cut.

  4. Step 4

Work your way toward the top of the hair using this method. Make sure you pay special attention to the areas flanking the neck on either side and over the ears, since these areas typically grow a bit longer. Go back through once you have done an initial cut and check that you have cut consistent length off the whole head.

  5. Step 5

Take both hands and use the finger method, while facing the client toward a mirror. Check to see if you have cut equal lengths of each side. Trim the back and sideburn areas of the hair using an electric razor for a polished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are wearing a dark shirt or working against a dark background and the client has dark hair and you want to accurately see the hair length, then use a light towel to check length and ensure consistency.
  • Do not work with a straight razor on yourself or a client without proper training using the instrument.
