Finger-picking on a guitar is used for many different styles, from folk to classic, and on various kinds of guitars, from steel strings to nylon. You can pick with your bare fingers or get picks that attach to ends of your fingers. Picking takes some coordination, but learning a style or two of your own can add depth and diversity to your playing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rest your pinky finger on the face of the guitar to steady your hand for finger picking. You will only use your thumb and your three middle fingers. The thumb plays the fifth and sixth bass strings, while the other three are used for the other four strings.

  2. Step 2

Practice finger picking by playing scales of any kind. You will want to be very comfortable with your right hand before attempting to play a song because you should not have to think about which string to pick. You'll need your memory for the words of the song and the right chords to play.

  3. Step 3

Work on your coordination if you are having trouble rolling easy with the finger picking. Drum your fingers on a table, back and forth from the thumb to the pinky. Concentrate on one hand, then the other. Then do it with both hands, making your fingers go in opposite directions.

  4. Step 4

Pick up different styles of finger picking through lessons. Experiment and listen to artists closely for the picking styles they choose.
