In a good golf club swing, all the mechanics work together to flow naturally through the swing and create a whipping motion at impact through the ball. This practice drill helps you get the relaxed feel and motion to improve your swing. Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice with a shaft with no club head on it or use one of your clubs and hold it upside down just ahead of the club head. Starting with an unweighted shaft first will help you learn the whipping motion without having to think about controlling the club head. Don't worry about mechanics in this drill but concentrate on the feeling of whipping the club.

  2. Step 2

Take a relaxed stance and relax your arms and body. Hold the shaft loosely and begin swinging it as if you're hitting a ball. The shaft should not touch the ground during this exercise.

  3. Step 3

Let your arms and body flow smoothly back to the top of your swing and accelerate quickly to bring the shaft whipping through your down swing. Listen for the "whoosh" sound as you whip the shaft through the hitting zone. Try swinging with one arm at a time to get the feel of the acceleration, then use both hands as you would in a normal golf swing.

  4. Step 4

Continue the drill by taking one of your clubs and holding it normally but keep it at about a 45 degree angle with the ground. Repeat the same whipping motion with the club to get the sensation of the rapid acceleration you want to feel while hitting the ball. Lower your club head so it's just brushing the grass as you continue to practice the swing.
