Gripping the golf club for an over-the-top swing can be the difference in a great round of golf and a pitiful round of golf. The following steps will show you how to improve your game by having the correct grip on your golf club.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your thumb on the shaft of the golf club. Start at the center but move it slightly right. Depending on if you are right- or left-handed will determine which thumb to place on the shaft. If you are right-handed, place your left thumb on the shaft, and vice versa if you are left-handed.

  2. Step 2

Put your other hand over the one that is already on the shaft. Place your thumb over the other thumb that is already on the shaft. Your fingers should be able to completely grasp the shaft of the club at this time. Be sure your grip is slightly to the right of the center of the shaft. This will allow you to have an over-the-top swing.

  3. Step 3

Grasp the club's shaft with both hands from this position. You have now established the correct grip on the club. This may be a very uncomfortable grip initially, but if you can get comfortable with it, you will drastically improve your golf game.

  4. Step 4

Practice using this new grip and practice your swing. Do this first without the ball so you can gain comfort with your grip and swing. When you become confident enough with your new grip, use a ball to practice.
