Step 1
Think of the backswing as a windup for throwing a baseball. A golf swing is like a baseball swing at a ball on the ground.
-
Step 2
Take note that the difference is that the ball is on the ground, your windup will aimed down and not flat.
-
Step 3
Throw a baseball with just your arms. Now throw it using your shoulders and back. You must use your shoulders and back to gain power.
-
Step 4
Assume your golf stance. Visualize the winding up motion. Take the club back without thinking about any one part of the backswing, just the idea that you're winding up to throw a ball.
-
Step 5
Step back and note that because you're swinging at something on the ground, you must turn your leading shoulder--the left shoulder for a right-handed golfer--slightly under your chin.
-
Step 6
Swing the golf club as though it were a baseball bat during your practice swing. That's how you would take a backswing if the golf ball were sitting on a four-foot tee. Simply think of your backswing as a windup as you prepare to hit a ball on the ground.
