Having a proper golf swing is the first step in improving your golf game. Learning the right way to swing will prevent you from developing bad habits that will hurt your game. It is also difficult to break yourself of those habits. Your swing will vary slightly depending on the type of club you are using. However the basic principals of having a good golf swing are the same.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grip the club properly. Your swing will not be right if you are holding the club wrong. Place the club across the fingers on one hand, not in the palm of the hand.

  2. Step 2

Place your other hand on the club so your thumbs are aligned one in front of the other. Grip pressure should be just enough to hold on to the club throughout the swing. Holding the club too tightly will cause the ball to slice.

  3. Step 3

Keep your knees slightly bent. The width your feet are apart will vary slightly depending on the type of club you are using. For example, feet should be shoulder width apart while using a driver--slightly less when using an iron.

  4. Step 4

Bend from the waist. Don't hunch over. Look at the position of your arms. Your hands and shoulders should form a triangle.

  5. Step 5

Pivot from the axis of your spine as you swing the club. Your thumb should be over your right ear as you start your downswing.

  6. Step 6

Turn your hips. As you are down swinging and you hit the ball your hips should turn toward the target. Limit the movement of your feet.

  7. Step 7

Follow through with the swing. Keep the same momentum going throughout the entire swing. Be aware the motion should be fluid.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. Perfecting a golf swing takes practice.
  • Consider getting a golf training aid. Several types of golf training clubs and aids are available that help eliminate bad techniques.
  • Keep in mind it's a game. Unless you are hoping to go on the PGA tour, don't stress over your golf swing. Enjoy yourself out on the course.
