After framing out a new interior wall, it's important to properly attach it to the ceiling. It is possible that some debris or materials may need to be cleared away before securing the new wall. After determining where the new wall will be positioned, prepare the area as needed for installation.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mark the center line of the new wall across the ceiling. At each end of the centerline, mark half the width of the new wall's top plate with a chalk line. Plan one stud at each end of the wall and then every 16 inches after that.

  2. Step 2

Lay the top and bottom plates side by side on the floor and mark where each of the wall studs will go using perpendicular lines across the plates.

  3. Step 3

Locate the joists in the ceiling and position the top plate along the center line drawn in step one. Nail the top plate into the ceiling joists using two 3 1/2-inch nails per joist.

  4. Step 4

Hang a plumb line from each end of the top plate to the floor and mark the location of the bottom plate directly below it.

  5. Step 5

Use stud-framing clips to secure each wall stud. Line each one on its mark flush with the edge of the top and bottom plates. Check to see if each is plumb and level and then nail into place.

  6. Step 6

Double up the studs each time you have one wall intersect another.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is possible to completely frame out your new wall ahead of time and install it as one unit to the ceiling using the same procedure. With this method, it is very important to measure multiple times to be sure your new wall will fit into the space it's intended for.
