How to Apply Nail Cuticle Softener for a French Manicure

Too often those who choose to do their own French manicures at home forget about the nail cuticle. If you neglect to groom your cuticles, you could end up with weak and unsightly nails and a poorly done manicure. Always be sure to apply nail cuticle softener when you give yourself a French manicure.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand towel
  • Nail polish remover
  • Nail files/emery boards
  • Cuticle softener
  • A small bowl
  1. Step 1

    Buy a cuticle softeners at any beauty-supply store that sells to the public. Cuticle softener creams are great to use in dry climates.

  2. Step 2

    First, wash your hands. Fill a small bucket or professional bowl with warm soapy water.

  3. Step 3

    Remove any nail polish you might have on and file your nails. Wash your hands again.

  4. Step 4

    Apply cuticle softener to the base of each nail on one hand. Then rub the softener into each nail. Let the softener permeate the surface for a minute or two.

  5. Step 5

    Place your hand in the warm soapy water and soak for five to ten minutes. Do one hand at a time so that the cuticles remain soft when it's time to push them back.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's not always necessary to use a nail cuticle softener to soften cuticles for a French manicure. Soaking them in warm soapy water often works.
  • Cuticle growth is good because cuticles prevent bacteria from entering the lunula and causing infections. Apply cuticle cream daily to prevent hangnails, stimulate circulation and encourage growth.
  • Cuticle softeners may cause a slight burning sensation if you have small cuts on your hands or if you have sensitive skin.
