How to Move While Floating in the Water

The best way to achieve both velocity and distance in a float is to use the streamline position. If you use this position rather than just pushing off the wall with your next stroke in mind, you'll be well into the pool before you even need to start swimming.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Master the streamline position before you try floating in it. This position has your arms straight in front of your head with one hand over the other and the wrists and fingers in line. Squeeze your biceps right behind your ears, keep your neck long with your head in the water and pull in your core to get a plank-line position with your body. Keep your legs close together and point your toes to complete the streamline position.

  2. Step 2

Stand in the water next to the pool's wall. To float in the streamline position, which is the best way to float through the water, you'll need to push off the pool wall.

  3. Step 3

Prepare yourself mentally to move into the streamline position. It takes both concentration and physical effort to achieve the streamline position in a push off.

  4. Step 4

Push off the wall, moving immediately into the streamline position.

  5. Step 5

Feel the velocity of your float. You can move far out into the pool without completing any strokes because your body has very little drag in the streamline position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay close attention to your arms and hands as you push off the wall. If they float out to the sides of your body, you'll lose the aerodynamic quality of the position and won't be able to float very far.
