Step 1
Develop a strong throwing arm and be quick on your feet. As a quarterback, you must have the ability to throw the football downfield as well as manage to avoid rushing defensive players by moving your feet.
-
Step 2
Handle the snap from center. Every offensive play begins with the snap of the football (the ball being given from the center to the quarterback). Drop back a few steps and either pass the ball or hand it off to the running back.
-
Step 3
Read defenses. Quarterbacks have the ability to know what it means when defensive players shift their position or what a certain defensive formation means. This enables them to change the play, if necessary, to react to the defense.
-
Step 4
Call audibles. An audible is when a quarterback calls a different play than the one that was originally intended, based on the formation of the defense. A quarterback must know all the offensive plays of his team and be ready to call upon whatever play is needed against any defensive scheme.
-
Step 5
Avoid sacks. A sack is when a quarterback is tackled by a defensive player behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in the loss of yards. Learn to roll out of the pocket or, if necessary, throw the ball safely away.
-
Step 6
Have a strong, clear voice so the offense can hear you as you call out play signals, even in noisy stadiums. Be a leader. Be vocal, inspire your players to be their best and make smart plays. Use your head as well as your physical abilities.
