How to Tie a Crackle Back Fly for Fly Fishing

The crackle back fly is a very popular with fly fishermen. Where the name is derived is not certain, beyond a sort of cracking energy that's created by the turkey feathers as they extend up from the hook--similar to the erect hackles of a feral pig. Whatever the name's origin, this is an effective fly that you can tie yourself. Grab your fly tying gear and get tying. Read on to learn how to tie a crackle back fly for fishing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Five sections from a turkey round
  • Hook
  • Rotary fly vice
  • Tweezers
  • Whip finisher
  • Hackle pliers
  • Thread
  • Fly body material (folded piece of squirrel hide)
  1. Step 1

    Place your hook and feathers into your rotary flying tying vice. The quill of the feathers will be pointing away from the barb of your hook. You can use five sections from a turkey round to tie a crackle back fly for fly fishing.

  2. Step 2

    Grasp the tying thread in your tweezers and wind it forward until it is just behind the hook eye.

  3. Step 3

    Secure the tying thread with your whip finisher, but only do two rotations.

  4. Step 4

    Rotate the vice so that you can lay thread in the bobbin cradle.

  5. Step 5

    Use your hackle pliers to grasp the body material (a folded piece of squirrel hide) when you tie a crackle back fly for fly fishing.

  6. Step 6

    Turn the hook and feathers with the arm on the rotary vice to turn the hook. Wrap the body material around the hook, building up the body of the hook.

  7. Step 7
