Things You'll Need:
- Hook
- Red thread
- Needle-nosed pliers
- Scissors
- White plume
- Fly tying vice
- Thread bobbin
- Whip finisher
-
Step 1
Pull the thread away from the spool, clip off the curled end, and mount the thread into a bobbin. Insert the thread through the bobbin tube and pull the thread so you are able to use it to tie the Marabou Streamer fly. Red thread is often associated with this fly.
-
Step 2
Mount the hook into the jaw of the vice and lock it in tightly.
-
Step 3
Make the hook barbless by straightening the barb with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.
-
Step 4
Secure the red thread on the hook with a jamming knot, and then wrap the body of the hook from the hook to just behind the hook eye.
-
Step 5
Select the white plume you wish to use for the Marabou Streamer fly and separate the plumes that you are going to use with your left hand.
-
Step 6
Measure the plume before cutting it, to make sure it matches the size of your hook. It should beyond the end of the hook by about 3/4 inch.
-
Step 7
Hold the plume against the hook with your left hand as you're tying the Marabou Streamer fly and clip away the excess.
-
Step 8
Secure the plum to the hook with a few soft wraps of the thread in the bobbin, then do a few hard wraps (pulling more tightly). Once the plume is securely fastened, clip any excess away.
-
Step 9
Build up a large fly head with the red thread. Cover the material with the thread right up to the eye of the hook.
-
Step 10
Leave a portion of the white quill showing beyond the red thread. This creates a nice contrast between the red finishing thread and the quill.
-
Step 11
Set the thread into the whip finisher.
-
Step 12
Pass the whip finisher around the end of the Marabou Streamer fly five times.
-
Step 13
Pull the thread on the whip finisher so that it's tight, then clip the thread end very close to the fly head of the Marabou Streamer fly so no loose ends are visible.
